Common Problems People Looking into Physical Therapy Experience
- Low back ache that just won’t go away - pain in your lower back right above or below your belt-line. May be on one or both sides (generally worse on one side) and is usually low in intensity. May increase with prolonged sitting or bending. May be sharp or stabbing every once in a while, and just won’t go away.
- Sciatica – a stabbing or shooting pain in the buttocks that may or may not travel down your leg. Usually worse with sitting or bending.
- A “crick” in the neck – a pain in the neck (literally) that can start after moving wrong, sleeping in a car or plane, or from prolonged work at a desk (i.e. computer). You may also get headaches with this, or pain down one arm.
- Shoulder Pain, Impingement and Rotator Cuff strain or tear – a shoulder injury that may be traumatic (i.e. from a fall or lifting a heavy object) or come on “all of a sudden” and get worse over time. You may experience pain sleeping on that side (i.e. wakes you up), with lifting objects (even light ones, like a coffee cup), and with reaching across your body (i.e. to put your seat-belt on).
- Knee pain – most common is pain inside the knee joint, below the knee (on either or both sides of the patella a.k.a. knee-cap). You may also have stiffness and swelling (you’ll know this because squatting or bending your knee is difficult to do and may be painful).
